Costas Gabrielatos

Costas GabrielatosI am working part-time towards a PhD in linguistics at Lancaster University, doing corpus research on English if-conditionals under the supervision of Dr. Willem Hollmann and Prof. Anna Siewierska (previously my supervisor was Prof. Tony McEnery). Other areas of interest are the expression of modality and time in English, the implications of corpus-based research insights for language teaching in general, and pedagogical grammar in particular, and the use of corpus-based approaches in discourse analysis.

I also do part-time research and teaching at the Department of Linguistics and English Language (Lancaster University). I am currently working on the British Academy funded project, Analysis of spoken London English using corpus tools (principal investigator, Dr. Eivind Torgersen). Previously, I worked as a research associate on the ESRC funded project, Discourses of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK Press 1996-2006 (principal investigator, Dr. Paul Baker).

My teaching in 2007-2008 involves lectures on LING 206 (English: A Changing Language In A Changing World), and seminars on Ling 421 (Corpus Linguistics). I have also been seminar tutor on LING 203 (English Language: Past and Present), LING 206, Ling 208 (Language Acquisition and Language Origins) and LING 151 (Introduction to General Linguistics).

Other current/recent activities include co-ordinating the Corpus Research Group at Lancaster University together with Neil Millar, co-ordinating the academic committee of the 1st Lancaster University Postgraduate Conference in Linguistics and Language Teaching (LAEL PG 2006), and co-editing, together with Richard Slessor and J.W. Unger, Volume 1 of Papers from the Lancaster University Postgraduate Conference in Linguistics and Language Teaching.

Before I became involved in linguistics I worked as an English language teacher and teacher educator. I have designed and taught MA and BA courses in linguistics and ELT, as well as Cambridge ESOL Diploma and Certificate courses for English language teachers. I have also designed and taught short courses, seminars and workshops for language schools and ELT publishers.

I have published articles on different aspects of English language teaching, applied linguistics and, more recently, corpus linguistics and the role of corpora in language teaching. I have been an invited speaker at a number of conferences and seminars.
